The good stuff

First off, the timeline interface is way more intuitive than I expected. I started a simple beat with a MIDI drum pattern, dropped in a bassline, and was able to tweak velocities and timing without getting lost in menus. The mixer is clean, and you can route tracks to buses or effects chains without feeling like you’re hacking through code. I also liked how easy it was to undo changes - one click back if you accidentally mashed a note. And the fact that you can compile it yourself or grab a pre-built version? That’s nice for people who want control but don’t need to go full nerd mode.

The not-so-good

It’s not perfect. There’s no built-in VST support yet, which means you have to rely on LV2 plugins - and those aren’t always plug-and-play. I spent about 20 minutes trying to get a basic reverb to work because the plugin wasn’t loading properly. Also, the UI feels a bit… sparse. Not ugly, just minimal. If you’re used to Logic or GarageBand’s polished look, this might feel undercooked. And honestly, there’s almost no documentation beyond the GitHub wiki. You’re kind of left to figure it out as you go. So if you’re someone who needs hand-holding, this might frustrate you. It’s not for everyone.

If you’re tinkering with music on a Mac and want something free that doesn’t crash your laptop, give Zrythm for Mac - Download for Mac a try. It’s not going to replace your main DAW anytime soon, but it’s more than enough to sketch ideas, record vocals, or experiment with loops.
