I’ve been on a retro JRPG kick lately, and I finally dug into Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars for Ps4. Honestly, I was skeptical at first-two games from 1995 and 1998, remastered? But after playing through the first few hours, I was hooked. The story’s still got weight, the characters feel real, and the world-building is something you don’t see much in modern games. If you're tired of cookie-cutter fantasy epics and want something with actual political tension and emotional stakes, this is a solid pick.

The good stuff

The biggest win here is how the remaster respects the original while making it playable today. The pixel art is crisp now-no more squinting at tiny sprites-and the soundtrack? Holy crap, it’s lush. That opening theme to Suikoden I hits different with proper audio. I remember struggling to keep track of my inventory back in the day, but now the UI is cleaner, and even though the item system hasn’t changed, it feels less punishing. Also, the big battles are still epic. Watching your 108 Stars of Destiny charge into battle with their unique animations? Still gives me chills. And Suikoden II’s ending… yeah, still makes me pause. It’s not just a game-it’s a story that sticks with you.

The not-so-good

And yeah, the inventory system is still a pain. You can’t share items between party members, which means constantly swapping gear when you’re mid-battle. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s annoying if you’re used to modern RPGs where you just throw everything in a shared stash. Also, no save slots beyond the default ones-so if you want to try a different path, you gotta overwrite or start fresh. Not a huge issue, but a bit old-school for comfort. And the game doesn’t run at 60fps consistently on PS4, so there are occasional stutters during cutscenes. Nothing game-breaking, but worth knowing if you’re sensitive to frame drops.

Bottom line

If you’re a fan of classic JRPGs with serious storytelling and turn-based combat, this remaster is a must-try. It’s not perfect, but it’s faithful to what made the originals special.
