The good stuff

The tone mapping slider is where this thing really shines. I took three shots of my backyard at different exposures, stacked them in Photomatix, and just tweaked the tone map until the trees had detail and the sky didn’t look like a white blob. It’s not magic, but it’s way better than what I was doing before with basic Lightroom edits. The presets are a nice touch too-there’s one called “Natural” that gave me a result close to what I’d expect from a pro photographer, no extra fiddling needed. And batch processing? Game changer when you’re editing 20+ images from a trip. No more clicking through each one manually.

The not-so-good

It’s not pretty to look at. The interface feels dated, like it hasn’t seen an update since 2015. No modern drag-and-drop, no real-time preview on the main canvas-just a small window that updates after you click. Also, there’s no built-in exposure blending like in Photoshop or Affinity Photo. If you want more control, you’re kind of stuck with manual adjustments. And yeah, it’s free, but it’s also missing some advanced noise reduction and local adjustments that make other tools worth the price. Plus, the developer is unknown, which makes me nervous about updates or security down the line.

Bottom line

If you’re a Mac user who wants to try HDR editing without spending money, Photomatix for Mac - Download for Mac is worth a shot. It does the basics well, especially if you’re just starting out. But if you’re serious about photography, you’ll probably want something more flexible. Still, for a free app with no subscription, it’s surprisingly capable. Try it once, see how it fits your workflow. You might be surprised.
