The good stuff

The hand-drawn visuals are surprisingly sharp and full of personality-like if a cartoonish Zelda met a darker, more chaotic version of Risk of Rain. Each run feels different because the dungeon layouts change every time. I remember one session where I fought a giant eyeball boss that spit poison spikes, then had to dodge a falling chandelier while trying to heal with a potion I’d just picked up. The timing and reflexes needed are real, but not unfair. And yeah, there are over 100 items and 190 weapons-so much variety that I felt like I was unlocking new playstyles every few minutes. I even tried playing as a guy who threw flaming pancakes at enemies. It worked… oddly well.

The not-so-good

It’s not perfect. The lack of a proper tutorial means you’re thrown into the deep end. I died to a goblin with a club three times before figuring out how to parry. Also, multiplayer is hit or miss-sometimes it lags, sometimes people leave mid-run. And since it's free, don’t expect daily updates or fancy features. The game doesn’t even have a save system beyond your last progress. If you quit, you start fresh. That’s kind of part of the charm, but also a pain if you're distracted by a phone call. Plus, the “corrupted Castle Harwood” setting gets repetitive after 15 runs. Still, it’s not bad for what it is.

Bottom line

If you like fast-paced, randomly generated dungeon crawlers and don’t mind a little trial and error, Lost Castle for Mac - Download for Mac is worth your time. It’s free, runs smooth on older Macs, and has enough depth to keep you coming back. Just don’t expect polish. But honestly? For zero bucks, this is better than most paid titles I’ve played lately. Grab it. Play it. Maybe die to a floating skull. You’ll probably laugh anyway.
