The good stuff

What actually surprised me was how clean the dashboard looked. It shows every connected device - their IP, how long they’ve been online, and how much data they’ve used. I remember one time someone was streaming a video nonstop and I could just click to kick them off right from the interface. No fiddling with command prompts or system settings. Also, the real-time server load monitor helped me see when things started getting sluggish, which is handy if you’re hosting a few people and don’t want the whole thing crashing mid-session.

And yeah, it’s free. That’s a big win for anyone on a budget. The billing section isn’t fancy, but being able to pull up account details with a drop-down menu? Super convenient if you’re managing multiple users, like in a small café or study space.

The not-so-good

But here’s the thing - it only works on Windows 7 and 8. If you’re running Windows 10 or 11, forget it. I tried it on my newer machine and it flat-out refused to install. That’s a dealbreaker for most people now. Also, the interface hasn’t changed in years. Feels like it’s from 2012. Not broken, just… dated. And no mobile app or remote access. If you’re away from your computer, you’re out of luck.

It’s also not really built for heavy-duty use. I ran it during a weekend workshop with 15 people, and while it held up fine, I noticed lag spikes after about 12 users. You’d probably want something more robust if you’re running a full-scale hotspot service.

If you’re stuck on an older Windows machine and just need to share Wi-Fi with a handful of guests while keeping track of usage, this Hotspot software - Download for Windows might do the job. But if you’re on modern Windows or need reliability, better features, or future-proofing, skip it. There are way better options out there now.
