The good stuff

What really clicked was how clean the interface is. No clutter, no endless notifications. You can actually see your conversations without scrolling through 100 unread messages. I set up a custom theme in under five minutes - dark mode with a font size that doesn’t make me squint. Also, the encryption support is real, not just a checkbox. I’ve sent files between friends who use different clients, and they showed up fine. That’s rare. And it handles group chats without turning into a spam zone. Plus, being free means there’s no pressure to upgrade or watch ads. You don’t need to give it your credit card to use it properly.

The not-so-good

It’s not exactly “plug and play” if you’re new to XMPP. The setup isn’t as simple as logging in with Google or Apple. You might have to look up your server settings, which can be a hurdle if you’re not tech-curious. Also, it doesn’t integrate with most mainstream services like WhatsApp or Discord - so if you’re relying on those, this won’t replace them. And honestly, the lack of mobile sync (at least from what I’ve seen) is a bummer if you switch between devices. But hey, it’s free, so you’re not paying for the missing pieces.

Bottom line

If you value privacy, hate app bloat, and are okay with a little setup, Gajim - Download for Mac is worth it. It’s not for everyone - definitely skip it if you want Instagram-level convenience. But if you’re looking for a quiet, secure chat tool that doesn’t sell your data, this one’s solid. Try it. It’s free, and you’ve got nothing to lose. Just don’t expect it to do everything. It does what it promises, and quietly.
