The good stuff

It’s surprisingly smooth when it comes to updating games. I remember one time I left my laptop overnight and came back to find Battlefield 2042 had auto-downloaded a 12GB patch. No fuss, no notifications popping up mid-game - it just worked. The cloud saves are a lifesaver too. I started playing Mass Effect: Legendary Edition on my work MacBook and picked right back up on my personal one. Also, the social features aren’t terrible - seeing which friends are online and jumping into a quick match? That’s nice. Not flashy, but functional.

The not-so-good

Here’s the thing - if you don’t own any EA games, this app is basically a screen saver. And honestly, the interface feels a little dated. It’s not ugly, but it doesn’t look like it’s kept up with Apple’s modern design language. There’s no dark mode support, which is weird for a Mac app in 2024. And the search function? Spotty. Tried searching “FIFA” once and it showed me an old version from 2015. Plus, it runs in the background even after you close it. You can disable that, sure, but it’s not obvious where.

Bottom line

If you’re already into EA games on Mac - especially FIFA, Battlefield, or the newer Star Wars titles - then yes, download the EA App for Mac - Download for Mac. It’s free, it works, and it keeps everything in one place. But if you’re just browsing for something to play, or you mostly use Steam, skip it. It’s not worth the clutter for casual gamers. Bottom line: useful only if you’re invested in the EA ecosystem. Otherwise, it’s just another app taking up space.
